I engaged myselft in this great contest last month, but I started around relationship of human ( spaceship) and alien ( as big snails structure ) based on the ecology. Alien would be air creator for colonising big planet , that's why I represent them as big organism breathing cloud.
Anyway, I had a some comment in my thread talking about the lake of relationship of the misunderstood of my picture, thats why I forgived the challenge cause I wasn't inspirated by drawing ufo that's look human ( legs / eyes / arms / head .... look totally strange ).

This is my last personal artwork, where I try to smudge and polish less my shapes, and let live paint stroke more and more.
The subject is a representation in my fairy world of Psyche, the ancient Greece goddess of spirit/soul.
I didn't have a large English vocabulary, but in France, we still name some type of mirror "psyche", and this terms is very used in psychology to talk about soul/spirit without a religious connotation.
I hope with this painting to gave a soul to this little fairy not so far back her eyes.
Let's talk about, I'm open to critiques and comments.

Update : I finish my tutorial , thanks for being patient, here is the link :
TUTORIAL & MAKING OF LINK

“Collar of magic pearls” arrives after a global look on my work, felt that my theme turn too muh to "toonish" rendering pictures and lose some relationship with the technique of the physical laws of reality. ( you know... radiosity / SSS material / shadows/ specular light.... all kind of things 3D artist are used to do, and 2D artist should sometimes learn more ;- ) )
So , I started a test which is quickly muted in a review of my various techniques that was sleeping, as bump, color layers, textures.... in a sharing between Painter and Photoshop. Made between 11h00 of the morning and 20h00 --> I specify it because it is rare that I “eat” all my drawing only on one day.

Click on THIS HI-RESOLUTION LINK to see a better resolution please, I made a lot of little textures details to train myself.

Annoyance

Hi everyone, I present you my first serious project of 2006: a small fairy irritated. It is a personal work to review my technique in general. I received quite a lot of critics lately which made me ask questions on some points (sharpness of detail, positions of the body, the colorizations) because I became more and more tempted by the speed-painting, and I passed less within time on my projects.
For the subject, I investigate the "cheesy-fantasy" ( I love this expression ) with humor because I find this caricatural and sympatique universe as a genre of universal soup of the imagination which misses cruelly spices with the ages. I did not find story which Would characterize why the small fairy is irritated, but I found that good-looking and intérressant diagrammatically (I investigate my style through this type of faces).
At the technical level, it is the almost homogeneous mixture (50 % - 50 %) between photoshop and to painter. Since I have the two I often worked with the one or with the other one.
But for this drawing, I wanted to use the best of Painter for the natural painting and the best of the retouch of colours with photoshop. The original is a rather big file, foreseen to make big printings.
Some close-up:

The Journey Begin

Hi,
This was my submission for the last great challenge. Thanks to all my Wip thread helper, and congrats to the winners.

My story for this illustration :
A children run away from his home with a frog friend and a fairy by a calm full moon night in a fantasy world.
The scene is focused on the feeling of the main character, looking on his bedroom still lighted and the rope he build with bed-clothes.His expression look like the last exitation to leave the stability/security to go to the unknowing ( the Frog looks a bit quiet showing the direction, cause he don't know if this new landscape is hostile or not ). They use a little boat with some food ( they preview a long trip ? ) and the boat float softly to make the natural transition that look as the journey begins.

Technics :
I used a outlined technics, more as old illustration than for comics effect. I wanted this picture to be destinated for childrens as a fascinating scene where nightmare or dream can start. I thought of a double page picture who could make the first illustration in a adventure story. I feel to have totally complete my detail job, and tooken my time for it.

Software used : Photoshop Cs2
Total hours : more than 60
Total layers used : around 30

Thanks all advicers and helpers I had on my wip thread. Thanks www.Tdt3D.com wip forum too.
Colorfull, crazy concepts and costumes with a black "edge" around characters that make the reading of picture easy and clean.
I made this illustration for a future tutorial on my hi-res CMYK cartoon technics for print as I use for my comics. I have still a lot of work on the tutorial cause CMYK rules in this type of work are sometimes complexe to show how to separe blacks for lines and CMY space only for color. Here is a RVB conversion version, click on the pict above to see the 1600 max width picture I originally post.
Thanks to comment if you like or dislike when I draw in this particular style ( I use it too by the past for my Journey Begins entry ).

Each life comprises seasons, and certain passages are identical to the autumn announcing the winter already. I would like by the means of this illustration, to invite all the sensitivities which cross or will cross such a passage, to follow the behavior of the old trees of our forests, while adapting to the biological rate/rhythm of the things, with calms and serenity, for a future spring regeneration.

The Crow and the Fox

"The Crow and the Fox"
french classic litteracy by Jean de la Fontaine

The Crow and the Fox
Master Crow perched on a tree,
Was holding a cheese in his beak.
Master Fox attracted by the smell
Said something like this:
"Well, Hello Mister Crow!
How beautiful you are! how nice you seem to me!
Really, if your voice
Is like your plumage,
You are the phoenix of all the inhabitants of these woods."
At these words, the Crow is overjoyed.
And in order to show off his beautiful voice,
He opens his beak wide, lets his prey fall
The Fox grabs it, and says: "My good man,
Learn that every flatterer
Lives at the expense of the one who listens to him.
This lesson, without doubt, is well worth a cheese."
The Crow, ashamed and embarrassed,
Swore, but a little late, that he would not be taken again.
---
This piece is my entry for the contest on 3Dvf about this author. I would represent the scene as a cute litlle comics to represent what I was imagine when I was a child and read it.
I hope you will enjoy. Did you knew this story all your different countrys ?

Narcissus & Echo

This picture represent a modern view of the myth of Narcissus & Echo from the Metamorphoses of Ovid.
( I can't write you a fast resume cause the story is so much interresting that I could loose some important parts, you can go here to know more about ).

I made a modern view of it, adapting some points working more the psychology of characters :
- Narcissus is in my work a traveller, he observe with passion his reflect on the glass acting as a mirror. A beautifull boy ,mysterious and deep.
- Echo is one of those thousand girls with magazine/headphones going to her work(student?) from everyday that is suddently interrested by him, but didn't know how to approach.
So, 2 world in confrontation, this kind of situation is may be not as caricatural and dramatic as the original myth but I would just put the same perfume in it and keep the relation to our century. Myth are still alive for me, and are played every days.

This picture was realised for 3D station "greek mythology" contest and receive the first prize and an award. Thanks to them. You can find here the WIP

a low poly character

This may be strange to see a 3D lowpolycharacter in a mainly 2D painting portfolio, but more than one time I add to modelise some idea of concept art character to help some production. My lowpoly characters & texture are not brillant, and are always redefined by a more strong in technics 3D artist. But it's make win time to production when concept art is finish. That why I thought it was important to show it as extra competences.
This one was made with Blender, export in obj with UV and 1024x1024 texture.
I know Blender and 3Dsmax ( I did'nt have a license for 3Dsmax so I didn't practice since my studies ).
